God and Obama Take the Stage in Charlotte

God and Obama Take the Stage in Charlotte

The climax of the 2012 Democratic National Convention occurs tonight when President Barack Obama takes the stage in what should be similar to former President Bill Clinton’s message about recovery and promise. Turn on any news channel this afternoon and you’ll hear analysis as to what the country should, and will, expect from President.

As I was going through the papers and listening to talk radio to develop my own thoughts, I was wondering what a concession speech by the President would be like. Now, before you rip this column to shreds, consider my point.

President Obama doesn’t play ‘not to lose.’ He is a ruthless campaigner and rabid competitor. Ask any star athlete how they prepare for a game and what the likely outcome will be, and you’ll never get a hint of misfiring confidence that the loser’s circle is their destination. Obama will stop at nothing to receive an additional four years, and his ads, messages and crystal clear finger-pointing are all the evidence voter’s need.

But let’s consider the alternative; and unlikely outcome if you ask a Democrat: What kind of message would Barack Obama give if Mitt Romney wins the election on November 6th? My guess is he won’t leave gracefully.

It’s hard to comprehend, but President Obama seems to be an insecure man. He doesn’t do well with criticism, and an election outcome where the opponent takes the top spot will further define his character. Ever notice how the late night comedians (including Saturday Night Live) rarely poke fun at the President? Yeah, and he rarely laughs at himself. An absolute sign of insecurity.

My guess is if Romney wins, President Obama will take the time to tell his followers and fans that the United States will not be on a course of prosperity. He won’t use the inverse (that would be politically incorrect), but he will also not mention growth and hope; messages that were all too repeated in 2008.

The last thought I have for the President regarding tonight’s speech, and a possible concession, is will he say the hot potato words of the week: “God Bless America!”
